Building For Their Future
With dedicated staff and teachers, DSUSD provides a high-quality education to our students. As we strive for excellence, it is essential to address the needs of our aging school infrastructure and ensure that our students have access to modern facilities and resources.
To continue meeting the needs of our students and the communities we service, the DSUSD Board of Education voted unanimously to place Measure A, a $675 million school improvement bond measure, on the March 5, 2024 ballot. Without increasing existing tax rates, this proposed measure would extend the current rate previously approved by voters at $60 per $100,000 of assessed (not market) value for so long as bonds are outstanding.
School Modernization: With many of our schools over 50 years old, prioritizing necessary repairs and upgrades ensures their continued effectiveness in serving our community for years to come.
Community Benefits: Strong schools help keep our communities strong. Even if you don't have school-age children, high-quality schools elevate our community's overall quality of life and safeguard the value of our homes.
Securing State Matching Funds: Measure A would qualify our district for approximately $80 million in state matching funds, which would otherwise not be available.
Responsible Financial Approach: Any proposed measure would include fiscal accountability including annual audits and independent citizens’ oversight, and would provide the necessary funding for school repairs and improvements while maintaining current property tax rates.
Local Funding to Support Safe, Modern Schools
Measure A could support identified priority needs in our district, including to:
- upgrade classrooms and science labs to keep pace with technology and support student achievement in math, science, engineering, arts, and skilled trades.
- upgrade inadequate cooling, shade structures, heating, and electrical systems.
- remove asbestos and lead pipes where found and fix deteriorating roofs.
- improve student safety and campus security systems, including security lighting, cameras, emergency communication systems, smoke detectors, fire alarms, and sprinklers.
- provide physical education facilities, modern labs, and career technical education opportunities so students are better prepared for college and in-demand careers.
Mandatory Fiscal Accountability
Any proposed local funding measure would include strict fiscal accountability requirements, including:
- all money raised would be controlled locally and could not be taken by the state.
- an independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee and annual audits would be required to ensure that funds are spent as voters intended.
- qualifying our schools for approximately $80 million in future state matching funds, which would otherwise not be available.
