Updated Reading Corner in Mrs. Martin's Classroom

Shadow Hills senior Laura Fimbres receives immense recognition for completing her California State Seal of Civic Engagement by helping improve literacy in DSUSD schools. Students can choose this path their sophomore year and finish either their junior or senior year. It allows the students to inquire on how to solve a social issue or contribute back to the community in a meaningful way.

In her junior year, she began working with the Ben Carson Foundation. Laura’s goal was to raise money to improve in TK kindergarten classes. She created a webpage where donors were able to donate and buy themed books, rugs, bean bags, and other accessories for the reading area in Tiffany Martin’s TK class at James Monroe Elementary School in Bermuda Dunes. Thanks to the donors' support Mrs. Martin’s reading area was completely funded and updated to the students' learning curriculum.

On top of this project, Laura maintains a 4.0 GPA, plays on the varsity volleyball, varsity softball, a member of the WorldQuest team, a participant in Junior League, and so much more. Her accomplishments and efforts earned her acceptance letters from USD, Pepperdine, and other top schools. Thank you Laura for putting your passion in literacy into action for the students.
